PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

The palace was built in the eighteenth century by the Sanillo family, wealthy landowners in the area. Il Palazzo fu costruito nel Settecento dai Sanillo, ricchi latifondisti della zona. It then passed to the Counts Gaetani and later to the Counts Filangieri De Candida Gonzaga. The Sanillo family, lovers of art and culture, in the 19th century enlarged the Palace with the main floor inspired by the Vanvitellian example of the Royal Palace of Caserta both in the external and internal architecture and they wanted to use the workers employed at the Royal Palace to decorate and furnish their residence. The Palazzo Filangieri actually has very remote origins: its foundations rest on the ruins of a Roman villa of which the tunnels of the aqueducts are preserved which in the past fed tanks and fountains, which are still practicable up to the border with the garden.

A PLACE FOR HAPPINESS

The four wings of the building develop  around the romantic courtyard, paved with herringbone bricks and divided into star-shaped sectors by limestone bands: the same stone covers the floors of rooms on the ground floor, which retain the ancient stables and warehouses for wheat, wine and oil, essential for agricultural activity.

AREAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

historical journey and artistic experience

From the main entrance, opening with the family chapel , a staircase leads to the main floor. Structured as a "double ramp scissor", it obviously reminds, in smaller proportion,  Vanvitelli's  Staircase in the Royal Palace of Caserta:steps are made of living stone, the balcony rests on two Doric columns,  walls are decorated with a faux marble base. At the height of the first ramp, a fresco depicts a dog hunting  theme, in correspondence with the second one, a pair of frescoes portraying  the Athenian philosopher Socrates on the left and the Athenian strategist Aristide on the right. On the first floor, the oldest part boasts a typical rustic kitchen, characterised by a large hood, placed above the fireplace, and rooms with ceilings supported by exposed beams or covered with painted paper from the period. In the nineteenth-century noble apartment, on the other hand, wallpapers reproduce the decorations of the Bourbon Palace in design and colors, the terracotta tile floors are painted in fake marble or geometric patterns, the canvases on the ceilings are frescoed, according to the fashion of the historicist eclecticism.

THE ROOM OF THE ICONES

THE ETHNIC COLLECTION AND THE HISTORICAL LIBRARY

By reservation or invitation it is possible to visit  the splendid display of icons painted on glass with precious framing by the Countess Sissi Filangieri De Candida Gonzaga. Occupying  one of the most evocative rooms on the ground floor the unique Museum of Icons, displays the works by artist Sissy Filangieri, born in Prague, who inspired by the Byzantine and Russian tradition, re-elaborates the theme of icons infusing sacred figures with an extraordinary vitality that transmits the authentic, sincere and instinctive spirituality  of the Slavic peoples, with their natural intuition for the higher worlds.

The  wood painted doors, the windows and the balconies were lacquered by the "Grove of London" in 1810. The romantic four-poster beds stand out for their retro charm, together with the originality of the furnishings, the sculptures, and  the mirabilia collected by Count Antonio Filangieri during his expeditions in Braz and the Amazon all set up in the small Ethnological museum sector of the Palace.

THE GARDEN AND THE STABLES

Upon reservation and during the events, you can enjoy the charm of the gardens and the rooms of the old stables, now also equipped for hospitality. With hedge mazes, ancient palm trees and blooming wisteria, the  botanical suggestions of the Royal Palace Park of Caserta inspired the garden of the historic residence, overlooking the Middle Volturno Valley. The garden is divided into two levels, the upper one, "Italian style", with the vegetation shaped according to the geometric lines, and the lower one, "English style" ideally joined by a neoclassical temple flanked by a mirror of water and a centuries-old holm oak.
